Meet the Innkeepers

ownersAlthough somewhat new to the hospitality business, Scot and Cynthia Long have each worked with the public in multiple capacities. Scot took on the challenges of a newspaper editor, author, museum director, social scientist, and college instructor. Cynthia gained valuable experience as a pediatric nurse, clinical charge nurse, receptionist, and publicist. They became the owners of the Rose Heart Inn during June 2016.

Both from the Midwest, Scot was born in Cincinnati and Cynthia grew up in rural southern Indiana where they met in 1991. With a bit of persuasion to leave behind her Hoosier roots, she relocated with her new husband to central Ohio in 1994 so that Scot could complete a doctoral degree in cultural anthropology at Ohio State University. About the same time, Cynthia became a registered nurse specializing in pediatrics. He worked for several years as a research scientist at Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center while she worked at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus. Currently, Scot teaches anthropology and sociology at University of Akron in Orrville and Medina County. Cynthia continues her work as a travel nurse, taking occasional assignments as far away as northern California. They have four adult children all living in Ohio, with two still in college.

Cynthia enjoys cooking, quilting, scrapbooking, and reading. Scot’s leisure time activities include tennis and golf, cycling, jigsaw puzzles, and keeping up with the scholarly world of anthropology. The couple remains actively involved with their Christian faith community. They also enjoy hiking at local, regional, and national parks where they observe and occasionally photograph wildlife, in particular birds. In addition, Scot and Cynthia share avocations of landscaping at the inn and working in the garden where they grow vegetables and fresh herbs for their B&B enterprise. Scot authored a nationally recognized book in 2010 featuring an estate garden in Knox County, Ohio. He is currently busy on a second book that encapsulates his 15 years as an agricultural research scientist working with Amish and Mennonite farmers in north-central Ohio.

The new innkeepers share a passion for preservation of history by maintaining the Rose Heart Inn’s original charm with Victorian era furniture and décor. Further, Scot and Cynthia strive toward a welcoming atmosphere and a relaxing experience for every guest received at the inn.
